Altaeros Energies

Altaeros Energies is developing a patent-pending airborne wind turbine that uses a buoyant shroud to lift a conventional lightweight wind turbine a few hundred meters in the air. Our technology is adapted from tethered balloons commonly used to lift multi-ton radar systems into the air for long periods for surveillance and weather monitoring. By enabling a high power wind turbine to be deployed from a standard shipping container in one day, we are targeting a $15 billion market in remote, military, and offshore power applications by lowering the cost of energy 65% compared to leading wind turbines or diesel generators today. Altaeros was founded by MIT and Harvard alumni and is based on Boston, MA. Altaeros was a finalist in the 2010 MIT Clean Energy Prize Renewables Track and recently showcased its technology at the US DOE ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit.
